Meet at the observatory at 7 to see telescope progress, then 7:30 at Robert Hooke Building
Speaker: Daniel Loy
Title: Microbial Survival in the Makgadikgadi Basin
Abstract: To study potential habitability on early Mars, we can use sites on Earth that are believed to be physiochemically similar to them during the relevant time periods. The Makgadikgadi Basin in Botswana has been identified as such an analogue site and will be used to investigate the habitability of early Mars by studying the microbial life present along with the host environment.
Bio: Daniel is a second year PhD student in the Earth, Environment and Ecosystem Sciences school of STEM at the Open University. He has previously worked as a microbiologist for Public Health England (now UKHSA) in Addenbrookes hospital on clinical samples, as well as for the Animal and Plan Health Agency in Pathology, Cell & Tissue Culture and Bacteriology. His degrees are in Coastal and Marine Biology with an MSc in Tropical Marine Biology. Daniel is also a Junior Officer in the Royal Navy Reserves, based at HMS President in London.
Meetings take place in the Robert Hooke Building

FUSION was formed in 2001 by students who recognised the
need to create a society for OU students and graduates whose primary interest is
in physics & astronomy. We have over 150 members many of whom are studying at
various levels of the physical sciences study program. We organise regular
events of interest to members, have a regular newsletter, a Facebook group. We
welcome current and past students or anyone with a general interest in physics
and astronomy.
New additions:
I've been contacted by Ms. Stephanie Cooper a home school Teacher https://studentsforresearch.org/ on behalf of Kiel,
who has a keen interest in data science. Kiel discovered an excellent resource on the role of Data Science in Astronomy and Interstellar Exploration at
