Title: Variable star research with SuperWASP
Abstract: The Wide Angle Search for Planets (SuperWASP) is a ground-based astronomy project using small aperture robotic telescopes to search for exoplanets orbiting bright stars. As a by-product, it has generated a vast archive of 30 million stellar lightcurves, each spanning 10 years and comprising tens of thousands of brightness measurements per star. An intensive search of this archive, running for 70 CPU years on a Linux cluster, has yielded around 750,000 periodic variable stars. These include pulsating stars, eclipsing binary stars, and stars displaying rotational modulation of their brightness due to starspots. The data allow studies of large numbers of a given class of objects and also studies of individual, rare objects. This talk will describe the SuperWASP project, the data analysis carried out, and some of the Astronomical results emerging from the work.
